Historical Background: In the one hundred years of its existence, the house has evolved from that of a home of a wealthy Gloucester businessman to a home of spinster sisters to, more recently, a house where violence and drug activity had been rampant. A family of four bought the lovely three story house that sits on the ocean about six months ago, hoping for a brand new start. What they didn’t count on were the ghostly inhabitants of years past who still call the house home.

Findings: The woman of the home is very sensitive to the energies in the house. She has experienced feelings of being choked, of being followed about the house, of smelling cigar smoke, and her children have reported seeing the apparition of both a man and a woman in their rooms. It has frightened them so much, they are afraid to sleep at night. When the team arrived, several of the team members felt the same sensation of choking. There were also feelings of anger and guilt. One of the team members, in walking down the cellar stairs, felt as though she were falling down the stairs. The team had no knowledge of the history of the home at the time of the investigation.

Conclusion: The owner had done extensive research into the history of the home and informed the team that the original builder of the home had been a successful business man in Gloucester, owning one of the saw mills in town. Behind the house was another structure where his workmen used to live. She discovered that one of the workmen hung himself and the team feels that the energy of the workman is still present. She was also able to discover that the original owner was a cigar smoker and that indeed, one of the spinster sisters who lived in the house in the 1950s, fell
down the cellar steps and died of her injuries.

Reason for Haunting: Whenever a violent death occurs, there is a high probability that a haunting will take place, because, in the case of the woman falling down the stairs, death may have occurred so quickly, she does not realize she is dead. In the case of the workman who committed suicide, it has been the team’s findings that suicides will cling to the place of death, unable to move on because of the reasons that drove them to take their lives in the first place – anger, guilt, despair, etc. The original owner and builder of the home is also there because he still considers the home his and does not feel the need to move on. The team was able to convince the original owner and the spinster sister to move on, but the suicide has not left. As of this writing, the present owner is still experiencing feelings of choking. The team has offered to return to continue the healing process with the suicide.

Historical Background: Nestled a few blocks from Cape Cod Bay, lies a lovely little beach
cottage built circa 1940’s which was bought by the present owner about 4 years ago. Oddly,
the previous owners left all their furniture behind except for a baby’s high chair, the door
knocker and a memorial plaque from the backyard. Once the present owner, his wife and
three children moved in, they were compelled to buy a baby’s high chair (which they did not
need) and place it where the old one had been. They also were reluctant to make any
changes to the home, even though the present owner is a contractor. During the four years
they have owned the cottage, they have heard footsteps in the upstairs hallway and there is
one bedroom where the children will not enter. It is reported that one of the children did spend
the night in this bedroom, only to have the bedcovers ripped off him. It had gotten to the point
where the wife refused to come down anymore, frightened by the recurring sound of footsteps
that would awaken her and the children during the night.

Findings: The team decided to spend the night in the cottage and immediately noticed the
difference in energy between the two floors. The downstairs was warm, cozy and very
comfortable. However, once the team climbed the stairs to the bedrooms, the energy became
heavier and oppressive. The team set up a video camera in the hallway where the footsteps
were heard and an EMF meter which captures changes in energy. Photos were taken both
inside and outside the home, and the team was able to capture a strange anomaly in the
hallway. During the night, the table where the video camera was located was physically moved
and the camera turned off. The EMF meter would go off every 2 to 3 hours and one of the
team members awoke to find a dark figure standing in the doorway just before the EMF meter
went off.

Conclusion: The team made contact with the original owner of the home, “George”, who the
team believed was still haunting the home that he loved. The team also came across a
situation they had not experienced yet in any of their investigations; the ghost of George was
keeping an event that had occurred in the home years before alive. In other words, the team
believes that one of his children was very ill and his wife, as many mothers do, was constantly
getting up and walking back and forth between her bedroom and the bedroom where the sick
child was (hence the EMF meter going off every 2 to 3 hours). The team believes this was the
footsteps that the present owners heard. It appears that George did not want any changes
made to the home and was somehow keeping the energy of this event replaying because he
didn’t want to “upset his wife” in any way. What was interesting was that the team did not find
the spirit of his wife haunting the property.

Reason for Haunting: A neighbor verified that indeed, a George used to own the house
and he and his wife were very happy together. They had several children and George died in
the home. As stated above, the team had never encountered a situation where an actual
entity was keeping the imprint of a dramatic event (such as a serious illness of a child and a
mother trying her best to soothe her daughter) alive. The team believes that, although dead,
George was reliving this event, thus keeping the residual energy from dissipating and allowing
this residual energy to keep replaying itself over and over again. After a morning of speaking
with George, the team was able to convince him that he had died and that it was alright for him
to leave and to allow the present family to live their own lives in the house. The team advised
the present owners to make changes to the house to truly make it theirs. Two months after
the team’s visit, the present owners spent the week-end in the house and reported that the
children slept and played in the bedroom with no problems, no footsteps were heard and that
the house feels better.

Case Closed.

Historical Background: During the opening volleys of the American Revolution, the town of Arlington, Massachusetts, then called Menotomy, an Algonquian word meaning “swift running water”, lay in the path of both the British and American troops. After the battles of Lexington and Concord which took place on April 19, 1775, the Americans hounded the British troops as they retreated back to the safety of Boston. The heaviest casualties of this ‘running battle’ took place in Menotomy where 25 Americans and 40 British met their deaths.

Findings: The team was called in to assist a family whose nine year old son was experiencing frightful apparitions of groups of bloodied men trooping through his room every night. They always appeared from the right side of his room, crossed in front of his bed and disappeared through the wall on the left side of his room. Not understanding what was going on, the young boy was losing sleep.

Conclusion: The team discovered that the boy had heightened psychic abilities. They taught him and his mother how to become comfortable with his gifts and not to be frightened of the men he was seeing since they were what is called ‘place memory’ (see explanation below) and not actual physical hauntings. As a precaution until the boy became older and could understand his abilities better, the team placed an protective energy grid around the house to keep out any further hauntings. The team can report that the boy has experienced no further disturbances.

Reason for Haunting: Research showed that the boy lived less than mile from where the heaviest fighting on April 19, 1775 took place. Wounded soldiers would have passed by his home after the fighting in Menotomy and the team believes this is what he was seeing. When a trauma such as a battle where one is fighting to survive takes place, the event leaves a strong energetic imprint. These men, bloodied and wounded after taking such a strong stand against what had once been their “Mother Country” would have left such an imprint. The boy, due to his strong psychic gifts, was able
to see them night after night, replaying their sorrowful march to either return home, try to get medical help, or to die from their wounds.

The Houghton Mansion

Date: Fall 2006 and 2007
Location: North Adams, MA

Historical Background: The Houghton Mansion dates from the 1890s and was built for North Adams’ first mayor. Despite his prominence in the town, Mr. Houghton suffered a terrible tragedy when his daughter Mary was killed in an auto accident, followed the next day by the suicide of the chauffeur, John Widders, who’d been driving the car. It wasn’t too long after this that Mr. Houghton himself died, some say due to the immense grief he suffered at the death of these two people. It is now believed that these three people haunt the mansion. After his death, the mansion moved through many hands and now houses a large Masonic Temple on the second floor.

Findings: The team has been privileged to visit the mansion several times as part of
paranormal conferences put on by the Berkshire Paranormal Group (who run the mansion) and the New England Ghost Project. On the team’s first visit, several members of the team heard the words “Get Out” as they ascended the master staircase. The team believes these words came from Mr. Houghton. However, during this visit and subsequent ones, the team came upon evidence of hauntings that did not involve
Mr. Houghton, Mary Houghton or John Widders. The team encountered the ghosts of two girls who died nearby who play pranks throughout the house, specifically creating the noises many people have heard. Yet the most prevalent spirit the team encountered was that of a very malevolent figure who, the team believes, is responsible for many of the physical attacks that have taken place in the mansion, even to the point of knocking over a tray of food at a restaurant where the team was dining. Conclusion: The team is still gathering evidence as to the identity of this malevolent
spirit. Members of other groups have contacted us corroborating their belief in our findings. As of this date, the harassment by this spirit continues at the Houghton Mansion and has appeared at several investigations conducted by our team at other locations.

Reason for Haunting: To anyone who has ever visited the Houghton Mansion, the large
Masonic Temple on the 2nd floor is an incredibly powerful room. We believe this dark entity is drawn by the power of the room and enjoys using a smokescreen to hide his identity. Although Mr. Houghton does haunt his old home, the team does not believe that he is the main culprit for many of the hauntings reported there. The team believes it is this entity, as well as the two girls that also haunt the mansion who are responsible
for much of the activity reported and experienced over the years.

Case Pending.

Location: Westford, MA

Historical Documentation: The owner has reported being pushed several times,
including once down a flight of stairs, resulting in severe injury to her leg. Has also
reported seeing the spirit of a man in her home and hearing a male voice call her name.

Findings: Upon arriving at the home, we noticed a memorial plaque on
the corner of her property which commemorated the memory of a soldier killed in World
War I. Entering the home, we at first felt nothing, but had to immediately leave when a
member of our team suddenly became very ill and could not carry on. In the car, she
reported feeling as though she was being torn apart and she could see nothing except flashes
of lights before her eyes. When we got her home, we realized she had a spirit that had
attached itself to her and we proceeded to detach the spirit. After a half hour of working on
her, she began to feel better and quickly recovered.

Conclusion: The team member’s description of what she was feeling and
seeing led us to the conclusion that she was reliving the soldier’s death. From what we
could ascertain, he had been blown up in Europe, suffering horrendous injury before dying
of his wounds. The flashing of lights reported by the team member were the bombs
exploding around the soldier. Later research into the soldier’s fate revealed that he had
indeed been blown up in the War.

Reasons for Haunting: When we made contact with the spirit, he revealed to us
that because of the horror of the War, he had stopped believing in a Supreme Being, but was
afraid to move on in case there really was a Supreme Being. He was frightened that God
would be angry with him for turning away. We spoke with him at length, persuading him
that it didn’t matter what he did or did not believe. No one would be angry with him. He
needed to forgive himself and move on. Another reason he had not been able to move on
was because he was still feeling the pain and trauma he had suffered at the moment of his
death. As a result of the team member literally reliving his death, the soldier was now free
of that trauma and, coupled with our persuasions that it was alright for him to go Home, he
was finally released. The owner of the house has reported a sense of calm and peace at the
house that did not exist before. As of this writing, she has had no other paranormal
occurrences in the home.

Case Closed.

Historical Documentation: Having just moved into a new condo, the owner began to
experience paranormal phenomena on a nightly basis. There was tapping on the wall behind her bed, hot and cold spots in the apartment, the feeling of not being alone and the sound of people talking in her living room, though there was no one there. The activities continued to increase until one evening when she heard a musical instrument stored in her closet begin to play on its own. By this time, she was ready to sell the condo at a loss and move out.

Findings: The team visited the owner on four separate occasions, each time clearing her apartment of spirits. The first visit resulted in the discovery of three spirits, captured
below in a photo. There was no sense of negativity related to these spirits; on the contrary,
they were non-threatening. One was of a homeless man who had died near the condo
complex, another was a woman who had died alone and lonely and the third turned out to be
the spirit of a man the owner had worked with years ago who had always been protective of
her and who, in death, continued to be protective of her.

Conclusion: With each visit, we felt no negativity. Instead, we concluded that it was not
the condo that was haunted, but the woman. In other words, in a recurring theme we have
discovered in many of our investigations, the woman was a natural psychic who was drawing
these spirits to her, although as she once told us, “I don’t want to be like you people”. Over
time, she admitted that she had experienced hauntings all her life. We were able to educate
her on the use of her gifts and relieve much of the fear and misunderstandings she had
towards spirits. As of this writing, she remains in her condo and has learned to manage her
gifts and the ghosts that follow her home.

Reason for Haunting: We are discovering more and more the phenomena we call
“haunted people”. That is, people who are natural psychics, but do not realize it. To a ghost
that is stuck or lost, a psychic person is like a light to them and they are naturally drawn to
that light, seeking help, refuge or companionship. As part of our services, we educate a
“haunted person” not to fear their gifts, and how they can use these gifts to assist those who
have, for one reason or another, not been able to find their way Home.

Date: Fall 2007
Location: North Adams, MA

Historical Documentation: The Hoosac Tunnel is a railroad tunnel in the North Berkshires that took over 30 years to complete between the years 1841 – 1875. 200 deaths occurred during the building of the tunnel, many from explosions, drownings and fires. It has been documented that at least one death may have caused by the ghosts of his companions when a nitro glycerin charge (nitro glycerin use was still in its infancy) was prematurely set off, burying two workmen under tons of rock. The man who had prematurely set off the charge was found a year later at the exact spot where his two co-workers had died. He had been
strangled to death. Over the years, people have reported seeing lights and the lantern of a railroad man signaling the arrival of a train that does not come.

Findings: We arrived at the tunnel on a bright, sunny fall day. Walking towards the entrance, we all began to feel anxious and nervous, feelings that increased the closer we got to the tunnel. We did not know the history of the tunnel at the time, only that men had died building it. Upon entering the tunnel, the anxiety increased and as we walked into the total darkness, we saw lights dancing ahead of us in the pitch black gloom. We heard what appeared to be pick-axes and in the pictures taken, we could see large orbs.

Conclusion: Because nitro glycerin was just being introduced, its use was cause for great anxiety. We believe we picked up on this anxiety of the workmen who died handling this deadly explosive. The lights may have been the lanterns men had to use back then when they were working within the tunnel and at least one of the members heard distinctly a male voice saying “Get Out!”

Reason for Haunting: When a sudden traumatic death occurs, the deceased may not realize they have died. Because of the large number of dead and the ghastly way they met their ends, they did not know that they were in fact dead and they were still reporting for work, hauling their pick axes and chiseling away at the rock to make the Hoosac tunnel.
